Je joue avec les mots - l'ordre alphabétique

One of our new, and very popular word work activities is here.

I printed and laminated the cards, so they can be reused (always thinking GREEN).  The students write the words in alphabetical order - using the pictures for help.  They can then make sentences orally or in their journals using the vocabulary on the sheet.

GREAT TIP: Have students take a picture of their list before they erase it, so you can see/assess their work!

Je vois...

As we continue to investigate using our senses, we used our sense of sight to notice things close up, and outside.  We went for a fall walk, to see some of the signs of the season as well.

Each of us got a clipboard and this simple page just to record what we saw.  It's FREE at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Allons-y

Les 5 Sens

We have begun talking about, and exploring with our 5 senses recently.  We've started with "Je touche"

We brainstormed some words we might use to describe how something feels (bosselé, rugeux, doux, mou, dur, lisse, petit, rectangulaire, etc)

Then, we touched with our hands, and described, and try to figure out, what mystery items were in the bags.  We recorded our predictions on these great sheets!

We even used our feet to do the same thing.  We made three sentences about each object (eg. "C'est petit. C'est mou.  C'est lisse.") before guessing the object "Est-ce que c'est...?"  It was lots of fun!

Community & Mapping

Our Social Studies unit of Community and Mapping includes an awareness of cardinal direction.  This game (available in English and French) really helped us become familiar with North, East, South and West.  We even challenged our learning to include NE, SE, NW & SW!!

After talking about symbols, and generating ideas about effective symbols, I gave out the blank game boards and symbol cards to each group.  I read out clues and students placed the symbol cards on the game board accordingly.

For example, I said "La Poste de Police est nord de la maison."  and students placed the symbol for the police station north of the house.

After the cards were complete, students practiced making sentences of their own.

"L'hôpital est est de la poste de police."

By the end, students were saying "La bibliothèque est sud-ouest de l'épicerie." etc.  Amazing!

Dominos - Reading Comprehension

After playing this game with the class, it was added to our centre options.   Students loved it!

Students play in pairs or small groups.  Just like dominos, one student starts by laying down a card, and reading the sentence on it.  The student with the corresponding picture lays their card down next to the first one.  Play continues with students laying down cards and reading the sentences, until all the cards have been played.

Les 5 au Quotidien - Je joue avec les mots

As we are just beginning to develop our French vocabulary, we began our Daily 5 practice (Les 5 au Quotidien) with "Je joue avec les mots" - practicing with words.

Students can use dry erase markers, magnetic letters, scrabble tiles, pipe cleaners, Play-Do, string, shells, beads, etc to make words.  Check out some great activities here, from Allons-y!
