Community & Mapping

Our Social Studies unit of Community and Mapping includes an awareness of cardinal direction.  This game (available in English and French) really helped us become familiar with North, East, South and West.  We even challenged our learning to include NE, SE, NW & SW!!

After talking about symbols, and generating ideas about effective symbols, I gave out the blank game boards and symbol cards to each group.  I read out clues and students placed the symbol cards on the game board accordingly.

For example, I said "La Poste de Police est nord de la maison."  and students placed the symbol for the police station north of the house.

After the cards were complete, students practiced making sentences of their own.

"L'hôpital est est de la poste de police."

By the end, students were saying "La bibliothèque est sud-ouest de l'épicerie." etc.  Amazing!
